Buyer Beware of the Do-It-At-Homers

In recent year hair extensions have become big business.  So much so that there has been an explosion of what I will call the “do-it-at-homers”.  These are people that know someone in the hair extension business and think it is a quick and easy way to make money.   They set up a website by copying other peoples information and portfolio work, advertise heavily on Google pay-per-click and “poof” they magically have become hair extension experts.

It is easy to identify these people from their websites.  The content looks like it has been collated from a variety of different sources, they have no fixed address and use a mobile number instead of a landline.  They try to entice customers by offering hair extensions at discount prices.

Before considering to buy discount hair extensions, however, make sure that the hair technician is qualified. He or she should be licensed and have past experience in applying hair extensions in a reputable salon.  Do not choose a technician based solely on price as the cost to your hair could be too great.

Once satisfied that the “do-it-at-homer” has the necessary qualifications and that spending 3-5 hours in his or her home will prove to be a comfortable and enjoyable experience you need to consider the creditability of the price and authenticity of the hair.

In order to be able to make an informed decision it is important to understand the circumstances behind this persons decision to be a “do-it-at-homer”.  Are they doing it because they are passionate about hair or because they believe it is a quick and easy way to make money?  Do they have sufficient financial resources to stock a proper inventory of hair?  Are they morally sound? Having answer to these questions before hand can save you a lot aggravation and disappointment.

In my experience the  “do-it-at-homer” is in it just for the money. They most likely view working from home as “tax efficient” by not having to fully declare their income. They chose this set up as they lack the financial resources, credentials and know-how to start their own salon.  This should sound the alarm bells as this is your hair we are talking about.  Is it really worth the risk to save a few pounds?
