Different grades of human hair are used within the hair extension industry with Chinese hair being the most popular used.  Chinese hair is the popular choice among many circles because it is often available in very large quantities at very cheap prices.

The problem with Chinese hair is that it is extremely coarse and thick.  Manufacturers, in an effort to give the hair a softer and finer texture, use aggressive acid treatments to strip the cuticle layer.  The chemical treatment completely destroys the cuticle layer and as a result leaves the hair brittle and dense.   In order to give the hair a healthy sheen, it is coloured and sealed with a silicone layer.  At first, the hair is shiny and beautiful but after a few washes the silicon layer starts fades away leaving the hair with a dull and matted look.
